is derived from the devouring
mouth demon of Southeast Asia.
This demon had such an
avaricious appetite that after
he ate the world, he ate himself,
until he had eaten his lower jaw,
whereupon he could eat no more. 
I feel that it is an allegory
for contemporary times.
